If a bookcase is a trophy case for memes, what is a library? A mausoleum for memes?
This takes me back to my comment earlier when Peckish et al. mentioned that it's not good to have a free internet and the sooner we start charging for information, the better.
If libraries were pay-as-you-go affairs, feudalism would be alive and well. The mandarins, the lords, would be in firm control of all information and the vassals would only complain if the price of mead went up.
